Cleaner Zheng Rongtian had an argument with his mother-in-law last year. He lost control and slapped her for more than 20 years. He sealed the room with a hammer and nails, poured gasoline and set fire to her in an attempt to burn her to death. In the first instance, he was sentenced to eight years in prison for attempted murder. He was also sentenced to a fine in August for injuring or damaging items in the possession of a civil servant. The case was appealed. The Taiwan High Court today rejected the appeal and upheld the first instance judgment, which can be appealed.
