Last year, a 4-month-old boy suffered severe brain trauma in Yilan. The nanny, surnamed Chen, was accused by his family of child abuse. She was once sued by the prosecutor and requested to be detained. However, there was a huge reversal in the court hearing. According to the appraisal report of the Pediatric and Juvenile Protection Medical Center of National Taiwan University Hospital, the baby's cerebral hemorrhage was estimated to have occurred three days before the incident. At that time, the baby boy was cared for by his parents, not at the nanny's home. After reviewing the evidence, the judge considered that there was a lack of specific evidence to show that the nanny had committed abuse, and it could not be ruled out that the injuries had occurred before the child was placed in custody. The judge ultimately ruled that the nanny was not guilty. This case reminds society that when facing suspicions of child abuse, it should uphold the principle of presumption of innocence and clarify the truth through professional medical evaluation to safeguard the rights and interests of the parties involved. The entire case can still be appealed.
